Discover the key nutrition strategies that can help you stay nourished, manage side effects, and build healthy habits while taking GLP-1 medications.

GLP-1 medications have become increasingly popular for weight management and diabetes management due to their ability to minimize appetite, increase feelings of satiety, and slow stomach emptying.

While these medications can be highly effective, nutrition plays a critical role in helping you maximize and maintain results, minimize side effects, and protect your long-term health.

Here's how to eat strategically while taking GLP-1 medications.

Protecting Muscle Mass Through Protein

One of the most important nutrition priorities while taking a GLP-1 medication is ensuring adequate protein intake to preserve muscle mass. Because appetite often decreases significantly, many individuals unintentionally consume too little protein. When calorie intake becomes too low, the body may break down muscle tissue along with fat stores, which can negatively impact strength, metabolism, mobility, and healthy aging.

Protein needs range from 1.2 to 1.6 g per kilogram of body weight, depending on your body weight, muscle mass, and physical activity level. Try adding protein to every meal and snack to help maintain muscle while on a GLP-1 medication. Lean proteins like fish, poultry, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tofu, tempeh, edamame, and legumes are excellent options.

I recommend sneaking protein into foods, so you don't add more volume to meals and snacks. For example, adding protein powder into coffee or cottage cheese into eggs can quickly boost your protein intake when your appetite is low. Resistance training and regular physical activity further support muscle preservation and are important complements to adequate protein intake.

Eating Smaller, More Frequent Meals

Many people find that eating large meals can be uncomfortable while taking a GLP-1 medication. Smaller, more frequent meals and snacks are often better tolerated and can help individuals meet their nutrition needs despite a reduced appetite.

It’s especially important to avoid long periods without eating, as this may worsen nausea and make it harder to get the right amount of calories and protein into your day. On days when appetite is particularly low, like around the time of an injection, nutrient-dense liquids can be a valuable tool. Smoothies, protein shakes, drinkable yogurts, bone broth, and blended soups may be easier to consume than solid foods while still providing essential nutrients.

Prioritizing Fiber for Digestive Health

Fiber is another key nutrient to consider. Constipation is one of the most reported side effects of GLP-1 medications, partly due to slower digestion and reduced food intake. Adequate fiber helps support regular bowel movements, promotes satiety, and nourishes beneficial gut bacteria that contribute to a healthy microbiome. Fruits like berries and vegetables like broccoli, plus beans, lentils, and seeds can help support digestive health. Because increasing fiber too quickly can worsen bloating and discomfort, it’s often best to increase your intake gradually while also ensuring adequate hydration.

Managing Nausea and Digestive Discomfort

Nausea, vomiting, and digestive discomfort are common during the initial stages of treatment or when you increase your medication dose. Several nutrition strategies can help reduce these symptoms. Try eating smaller portions, chewing food thoroughly, eating slowly, and stopping at the first sign that you're full to help prevent discomfort.

Bland foods that lack spice, like crackers, toast, rice, applesauce, or broth-based soups, may be beneficial during periods of nausea. It could also help to drink ginger or peppermint tea during periods of nausea or vomiting. Many people find that avoiding greasy, fried, highly processed, or very rich foods helps minimize symptoms. Staying hydrated throughout the day is also essential, particularly if vomiting occurs.

Focusing on Nutrient Density

Although appetite suppression can support weight loss, it may also increase the risk of nutrient deficiencies if food intake becomes too restricted. Rather than focusing solely on eating less, try eating more strategically.

A balanced diet that includes lean proteins, fruits and veggies, high-quality carbohydrates like beans, whole grains, and starchy vegetables, and healthy fats from foods like nuts, seeds, olive oil, and avocado can help provide essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytonutrients, making the results from the medication more sustainable.

Prioritizing nutrient-dense foods helps support energy levels, immunity, digestive health, and overall well-being throughout your weight-loss journey.

Using Reduced Food Noise to Build Lasting Habits

One of the unique benefits many people experience while taking a GLP-1 medication is a reduction in "food noise," or the constant thoughts, cravings, and preoccupation with food that can make healthy eating feel challenging. This quieter mental space creates an opportunity to build sustainable nutrition habits by focusing on balanced meals that include protein and fiber, which help promote fullness, satisfaction, and steady energy levels.

It can also be a valuable time to become more curious about eating behaviors by exploring whether hunger is physical, emotional, stress-related, or habit-driven. While cravings may still occur, they can often be addressed with more nutrient-dense alternatives that provide similar satisfaction, like "nice cream" made from blended fruits, honey, and yogurt instead of ice cream or roasted chickpeas in place of chips.

Using this period to develop an awareness of triggers or cues, eating patterns, and healthful food swaps can help establish lasting habits that support long-term success beyond the medication's effects.
