These holiday eating tips from our nutrition expert help you find balance during the busiest time of year without guilt, restriction, or all-or-nothing thinking.

The holidays bring a season of gatherings, rituals, and indulgences that nourish the spirit as much as the senses. And with a mindful, intuitive approach, this time of year can feel both celebratory and grounding.

Instead of bracing for disruption, move through the festivities with ease: savoring the foods you love, staying connected to your body’s cues, and honoring your well-being without sacrifice.

Here, health and performance dietitian Shannon Jacobs shares her tips for creating a holiday experience that feels intentional, harmonious, and wholly your own.

1. Ditch the All-or-Nothing Mentality

During the holidays, it's easy to feel like one indulgent meal or party will derail all your progress. But one meal is never the reason we meet or miss our goals. Our daily habits are. Instead of flipping the switch off, try turning the dial down. Stick to your routine with balanced meals that prioritize protein, fiber, and nutrient-dense foods leading up to a particular meal or event. This mindset helps you enjoy special events guilt-free while still staying aligned with your health goals.

2. Follow the 80/20 Rule with Intention

The 80/20 rule can be beneficial this time of year because it creates structure while allowing flexibility. If you eat 21 meals a week, aim for about 17 meals that support your goals and leave room for four meals that are more indulgent or social. The key is planning. Decide which meals will be more nutritious and which will be indulgent, and set realistic expectations for alcohol, sweets, or rich holiday dishes. This approach helps quiet the all-or-nothing thinking and makes it easier to enjoy the season while still making progress.

3. Don't Save Up Calories

Skipping meals to "save up" calories for a big event almost always backfires. Letting yourself get too hungry increases cravings, makes it difficult to manage portion control, and often leads to overeating. Instead, stick to your usual balanced meals that include protein, fiber, and healthy fats. This supports stable blood sugar, reduces overeating, and helps you feel in control when you arrive at a holiday gathering.

4. Slow Down and Savor Your Food

Holiday meals are often richer, which makes them the perfect opportunity to practice mindful eating. Slowing the pace of your meal helps you tune in to hunger and fullness cues, improve satisfaction, and naturally manage portions. Put your utensil down between bites, chew thoroughly, and avoid prepping your next bite while you're still chewing the current one. Take a sip of water, enjoy the textures and flavors, and check in with yourself halfway through the meal to see how hungry or full you feel.

5. Avoid Grazing – Create a Plate Instead

Holiday parties often involve small bites and appetizers that make it easy to graze without realizing how much you've eaten. Instead, try placing your snacks or appetizers on a plate so you can visually see your portions and enjoy them more mindfully. This simple step helps prevent overeating and allows you to feel comfortably satisfied, not overly full, before the holiday meal.
