What’s Your Beauty Resolution?

Lose 10 pounds. Go to the gym at least three days a week. Eat more vegetables. Watch less TV. Quit smoking.

So many of us commit to resolutions and goals — typically at the New Year, and then again in the months leading up to summer. The most common include fitness, healthy eating, and limiting habits that may be holding you back. And while these are all valid intentions, have you ever considered adding a beauty resolution to the mix? Think about it; glowing skin, healthy hair, and fabulous nails can be a game changer in how you feel. Committing to a beauty regime is not just about superficial appearance, it’s about respect. And we all know that when we respect ourselves, we garner respect and admiration from others. Just remember, taking care of yourself is a major confidence booster, not a narcissist endeavor.

These suggestions from Canyon Ranch beauty experts may inspire you to create and commit to some beauty resolutions that will transform how you feel this year —on the inside and out.

Carve out More Time for Self-Care

Whether you’d like to commit to taking a relaxing bath every week or flossing your teeth every night, give it the time it deserves — even if that means scheduling it into your routine. Perhaps you can create a Sunday night ritual of finishing off the weekend with a long, hot soak in your tub, or start getting ready for bed just five minutes earlier each night so you have the time to clean your teeth properly. It doesn’t have to require a big shift, just a conscious effort to make it happen.

Upgrade Your Gear

If your beauty resolution involves products, consider getting some new items to start fresh and feel inspired. For example, if you’re trying to moisturize more, using a luxurious body lotion — one with a pleasing scent or shea butter for a luxurious silky feel — might encourage you to spend a few more minutes massaging it into your body when you get out of the shower. If you’re aiming to meditate for a few minutes each day, lighting a beautiful candle might help create a soothing setting. Finally, if you want to upgrade skincare, talk with your dermatologist to see what ingredients are best for your skin type, and commit to washing your face regularly. Another resolution for a tighter, plumper complexion is a simple weekly face mask. Over-the-counter mud masks or hydrating under-eye gels can work wonders.

Make Special Treatments Part of Your Regular Routine

For many of us, the only time we schedule a facial, massage, acupuncture session, or other expert treatment is when we’re trying to address a specific issue (such as acne or neck pain), or when using a gift certificate. Try taking advantage of these feel-good services more often. In fact, massage and acupuncture are now accepted by some health insurance providers, so inquire. Reducing stress hormones such as cortisol, have been linked with better health, complexion, and better sleep. Maybe set aside money each month to get the reflexology massage you enjoy, or set up six body wrap treatments for the first half of the year now, for example. There are also specials you can find online, or within your dermatologist’s office, to make these treatments more affordable. Choose something that you look forward to — as a treat for mind, body, and soul.

Get a Good Night's Sleep

Did you know that people who sleep eight hours a night tend to eat less? If you don’t get enough sleep, your body produces ghrelin, a hormone that boosts appetite. Your body also decreases the production of leptin, a hormone that tells you you’re full. So when you are sleep deprived, your body actually sends you signals to eat more. Add stress to the mix, and you can understand why you may crave sugary treats and coffee — which is dehydrating and tough on the skin. Sleeping well also helps to get rid of dark circles under the eyes, too. Getting eight hours of rest a night, helps you wake feeling — and looking — refreshed. So what are you waiting for? Commit to getting more shut eye this year. For tips, try not to exercise or eat too late at night. Limit screen time and dim lights an hour before bedtime in order to stimulate melatonin production in the body. And perhaps opt for a relaxing bath, or give yourself a foot massage, or listen to a guided meditation, to help you wind down earlier.
