The world’s premier health and wellness resort began with an Aha! moment. On New Year’s Day in 1978, Mel Zuckerman – overweight, sedentary, stressed-out, with high blood pressure and a galaxy of other health problems – resolved to lose 40 pounds. By March 4, he had gained four.
Desperate, he fled to a “fat farm” in California, planning to spend 10 days. He ended up staying a month and changing his life forever. There, he met an inspiring fitness expert who had him running a mile and a half within 10 days. As a result, Mel realized that he had the power to dramatically improve his health and happiness. His goal was to continue along the healthy track he’d found.
Mel and his wife Enid – who had long lobbied her homebuilder husband to create a health spa in Tucson – knew that they needed to live in an all-healthy environment. No such place existed. So in 1979, to no fanfare whatsoever, they opened Canyon Ranch in Tucson. They were eager to share their healthy vision with as many people as possible.
Where we’ve been
Canyon Ranch has been at the forefront of expanding the concept of a health resort. It introduced an integrative professional approach featuring board-certified physicians, registered dieticians, exercise physiologists, licensed therapists and other highly skilled, caring staff who work together to provide a 360° approach to wellness.
After a rocky start, Canyon Ranch became famous and, in time, extraordinarily successful – a catalyst for the national health and fitness revolution. With their business partner Jerry Cohen, the Zuckermans opened Canyon Ranch in Lenox in 1989 and, from 2008 to 2015, Canyon Ranch Living – Miami Beach with the adjacent Canyon Ranch Hotel & Spa.
In 1999, the first Canyon Ranch Spa + Fitness day spa opened at The Venetian® in Las Vegas. Canyon Ranch® At Sea launched in 2004 on board Cunard’s Queen Mary 2®. Today, Canyon Ranch® is on 20 vessels with Oceania Cruises®, Regent Seven Seas Cruises® and Celebrity Cruises®. The ultimate in healthy living experience is available at Canyon Ranch Living®, residential communities in Lenox and Tucson.
Where we’re going
The Zuckermans retired in 2017 when Mel reached age 89, and the Canyon Ranch baton was passed to its dynamic new CEO Susan Docherty as ownership transferred to Crescent Real Estate. This exciting new phase opens even greater opportunities for Canyon Ranch. While staying true its original mission of providing healthy living opportunities, the Ranch has expanded resources and an energetic leadership team with global vision.
From its revolutionary roots, Canyon Ranch looks ahead as a fast-growing, forward-looking company fiercely devoted to its mission: Creating environments and products that promote health and the highest enjoyment of life for all people.
