Mel And Enid Zuckerman Honored By University Of Arizona College Of Public Health

TUCSON, AZ - August 21, 2002 - Canyon Ranch founders Mel and Enid Zuckerman received a unique honor from the Arizona College of Public Health at The University of Arizona at a press conference Wednesday, August 21. UA president Peter Likins announced that the college was re-named the Mel and Enid Zuckerman Arizona College of Public Health. It is only the third UA college to be named after a major benefactor.

In the two decades after opening Canyon Ranch in Tucson in 1979, the Zuckermans have developed strong ties with the university, starting with support and collaborations with the departments of Exercise, Physiology, and Nutritional Sciences and gradually moving into a relationship with the Arizona Health Sciences Center. They participate on community advisory boards for the Arizona College of Public Health and the Arizona Arthritis Center and have also supported the UA Sarver Heart Center, the Arizona Cancer Center, and the Program in Integrative Medicine. Over the years the Zuckermans have donated more than $20 million to the UA and have been described as "exemplary advocates of healthier lifestyles throughout the nation."

The Mel and Enid Zuckerman Arizona College of Public Health is the first public health college in the four corner states and represents a tri-university collaborative effort among The University of Arizona, Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University. The mission is to promote the health of individuals and communities with a special emphasis on diverse populations and the Southwest. Programs concentrate on the reduction of health disparities, the development and maintenance of healthy communities and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.
