Whether you explore woodland trails and historic sites in the scenic Berkshires, or stroll among giant saguaros in a Sonoran Desert canyon, memorable outdoor moments await at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Massachusetts, or in Tucson, Arizona.
Hiking is a safe adventure everyone can enjoy, says Randy Kinkade, Outdoor Sports Manager at Canyon Ranch in Tucson. There are hikes for all fitness levels. Two experienced guides go out with each group, and you can hike at your own pace. It’s the perfect way to enjoy camaraderie with friends or fellow guests, far from the demands of everyday life.
Season by season
In Lenox, spring streams and waterfalls give way to snowshoeing and pole hiking in winter. Tucson’s mild winter days are perfect for exploring the desert at lower elevations. In summer the mountains beckon, with cooler hikes and stunning views from pine-crowned ridges.
Specialty hikes range from moonlight hikes to for-fee painting and photography expeditions. A hiking week each year at both properties offers adventures for the more experienced hiker. But, says Randy, hiking enjoyment is very personal. “Something will touch your heart, whether it’s sunlight on a cliff wall, water in a streambed, or the moment before sunrise when the sun lights up the trees on top of the mountains like a flame.”
On the trail, Ranch guides can tell you about the history, geology or flora of the area. They can also point out the tracks of native creatures, from coyotes and javelina to rabbits, birds and deer.
Getting out in nature is one of the best ways to step away from stress. All you need is a pair of sturdy shoes or comfortable hiking boots – and, says Lenox Outdoor Sports Guide Cathy Palmer, “It’s a sport you can always enjoy. All you need to do is put one foot in front of the other.”
