with Louis Van Amstel

He’s LaBlast!

Finding the best match is important in life, whether it’s the ideal dance partner or a place that feels just right. Louis Van Amstel can talk about it all firsthand. As a favorite dance professional on Dancing with the Stars and a three-time ballroom dancing world champion, he has achieved synchronicity with many partners – and his growing connection with Canyon Ranch feels like another perfect pairing.

“At Canyon Ranch, I can actually relax,” says Louis, whose hectic schedule and celebrity status rarely let him rest. “It’s not about the phone or emails or what other people need from me. Once you’re here it’s all about you, isn’t it?”

In keeping with Louis’ affinity for Canyon Ranch – and ours with him – guests are now taking advantage of his exclusive new dance/fitness classes, LaBlast. Louis provides intensive, periodic training for Canyon Ranch fitness staff, so they can follow in his footsteps, leading irresistible classes with strategic exercise goals.

“Dance classes give you that party spirit,” Louis says. “I agree with the Canyon Ranch approach – if people are having fun at something, they’ll keep doing it. My classes are definitely fun, and there are levels of difficulty, so we keep pushing the limit.”

“This is a place for inspiration. It’s where I feel rejuvenated, where everything is good for you, including the food. Nothing feels like work here.”

The Netherlands native has been a dancer and an athlete since childhood. He chose to concentrate on ballroom dancing when – to his surprise – he won a competition at age 10. He has excelled in it because of his competitive nature, discipline and love of movement. But he also knew that he should set a limit on his dance career, and be ready to change gears at 40.

“I’m an entrepreneur now,” he says. “My dreams are going in new places – LaBlast studios, clothing, producing – who knows what else?”

With these big new ventures ahead, Louis says the Ranch spirit of “possibility” especially appeals to him. “This is a place for inspiration. It’s where I feel rejuvenated, where everything is good for you, including the food. Nothing feels like work here.”

And it’s about more than the obvious pleasures. Louis has sampled various body treatments and activities that proved memorable. On one trip to Canyon Ranch, he suffered a muscle injury and saw a massage therapist for help. “It was the best massage I’ve ever had!” he says. “The therapist got right into the muscle and knew exactly what to do.”

After decades in the public eye, Louis places high value on simply being quiet. He says he enjoys his downtime at Canyon Ranch like nowhere else. He loves that he can deeply relax here, and that guests get the high-energy boost of LaBlast.

“It’s about finding balance and moderation,” he says. “We all need excitement, and we all need serenity. Canyon Ranch is that place for me.”
