Fitness Assessments - Where do you want to finish?

We all have defining moments. I have one that stands out in my mind.

It was a cool day in December, the day of the Tucson Jingle Bell Run – my first 5K race. The defining moment came when my Etonic running shoe hit the finish line. Two girlfriends who’d encouraged and supported me through the months of training that had brought me to that line were standing there screaming for me to sprint it to the end. You might be thinking that this moment was defining because I accomplished something that was physically challenging. Considering my history as the fat girl who was always the last picked for the playground dodgeball game, you might be right. But the reason why I really hold it in a place of honor is that it was a moment of life when I truly celebrated success. I’d envisioned that line for months, and now I’d crossed it.

No matter what your goal may be, knowing what it looks like is the first step in reaching it. The second step is understanding exactly where you are now. Two services that can help you get there, no matter where you’re starting from, are the Basic Fitness Assessment at Canyon Ranch in Tucson and the In-Depth Exercise Physiology Assessment at Canyon Ranch in Lenox. Both offer a detailed assessment by an exercise physiologist of your current physical fitness, including your aerobic capacity, muscle strength, flexibility, endurance, body composition and agility.

Gyrotonic – for body & mind

When was the last time you enjoyed a great, big yawn? Can you recall reaching up to the sky, eyes gently closed or squeezed tight as your mouth opens wide? I have now yawned three times, just typing those two questions! It feels so good. I think it is because of the burst of oxygen that fills the lungs and the stretch that so often accompanies it. Okay, that’s now four times for me.

There’s a great form of movement that replicates the benefits of a good stretch. It’s called Gyrokinesis. It uses a piece of equipment called the Gyrotonic Expansion Tower – you may have seen in a Pilates studio. Frankly, it looks like a medieval torture machine. Trust me, the feeling you get while you’re on that equipment is far from pain.

Gyrotonic was developed by a man named Juliu Horvath. He was a professional dancer, swimmer, gymnast and competitive rower who practiced yoga and developed what he called “Yoga for Dancers.” This was the beginning of what we now know as Gyrokinesis. The benefits of this work include improved coordination, flexibility, posture and strength.

Horvath dreamed of an apparatus that would improve dancers’ ability to turn, and eventually he developed the Gyrotonic Expansion Tower for that purpose, but it has benefits for everyone. You can perform over 100 different exercises using the Tower. I have recommended this work for people who are rehabilitating an injury, have limited movement, want to improve their flexibility and upper body strength or who just love Pilates or yoga and want to try something new.

I have always encouraged guests to find ways of incorporating what they learn at Canyon Ranch into their daily routines at home, and, frankly, most people are not going to consider purchasing the Tower for their living room. But that shouldn’t stop you from benefiting from the Gyrotonic work at home, since all you need is a chair or stool.
I experienced Gyrokinesis at Canyon Ranch in Tucson a few weeks ago. It was just as pleasant as the Tower, and I now do some of the movements while enjoying my favorite television shows.

So, you can benefit from Horvath’s system on the Tower at Canyon Ranch or sitting behind your desk or hanging out at home in front of the tube. Just imagine the rush of that great big yawn and being able to replicate that at anytime with a few twists and turns of your spine. Gyrontonic and Gyrokenisis are gifts for body and mind, and I am thankful for them.

We Met Wearing Boas

The room was packed with women. I did hear that men also participate in the class. But today, girlfriends of all shapes, sizes, ages and backgrounds gathered together to celebrate the beauty of movement. When I arrived, there were no chairs left but I did manage to snag a black boa. The instructor walked in wearing a pair of hip-high white boots that I would have killed to be wearing. As I eyed those boots, I thought, “How sexy can one really feel wearing sweat pants and tennis shoes? I wonder if those come in a size 12.”

A DJ was spinning tunes for us. The instructor encouraged us to partner up so that we would all have the experience of using the chair. Sharing a smile that was half encouragement and half excitement, I met my new striptease partner, Ms. Sophia from Atlanta, Georgia. She was gorgeous! She was in her 60s and looked absolutely fabulous with the black boa framing her silver locks. And, yes, I did say striptease partner – and we are still talking about Canyon Ranch on this blog.

The Fit Strip class offered at Canyon Ranch in Tucson is all the rage. The room is packed and what happens inside the room is only half the fun. The other half is performing for the audience that inevitably assembles outside of the glass gym doors. A point of clarification – no clothing is actually removed during the class, except maybe the flinging of a boa or two. The removal of clothing happens later at night, as our “day at Canyon Ranch” is reviewed for partners and spouses vacationing with us. I can hear it now: “Hey honey, I learned this fabulous dance routine in class today. Let me show and tell for you … Now, imagine your hearing Sexy Back by Justin Timberlake.”

The truth is the class is not about stripping at all. It is about self-esteem. Feeling comfortable in our skin and expressing movement for our own enjoyment. For some, that is an exploration of sexuality or sensuality as they watch themselves in the mirrors around the room. For others, it is the courage to just walk into a class called “Fit Strip” and give it a try. Regardless of all the chatter going on in their minds as to what they must look like moving this way, they show up to see what would happen. I would even bet that a small portion of those that take this class aren’t seeking the self-esteem as much as they are looking for a fun, alternative workout.

Returning now to Ms. Sophia and the escapades we shared on that little chair wearing our black boas. We did not stop encouraging each other or laughing together the entire class. Both of us created stories in our minds in order to set the stage for our performance. Those stories may have been as different as our ages, backgrounds and body shapes, but we shared a common experience. We took a chance to try something new and walked away having created great memories and feeling good about ourselves.

Ms. Sophia and I ended up spending the next hour in the Spa lobby sharing stories and thoughts about our Fit Strip experience and life. We both agreed: You can feel really sexy in sweat pants and tennis shoe, but we’re keeping our eyes out for a pair of those boots!
